- On Thursday 16 December 1880 the first shots of the First Civil War was fired in Potchefstroom.
- Potchefstroom was the first Town North of the Vaal River
- National monuments of Potchefstroom include:The old Gunpowder house, Old Police station building, Kruger kraal postal, Heimat building, Magistrates office, Oak Avenue.
- Potchefstroom has the oldest city hall north of the Vaal River
- The Dutch Reformed Church in Potchefstroom is the oldest existing church north of the Vaal river in South Africa.
- In 2002/2003 the Northwest Stadium/Sedgars Park was rated best pitch, best outfield best conditions – the first time that one cricket stadium in South Africa received all these accolades.
- The Oval was named after Kenneth McArther, a Potchefstroom Policeman that won South Africa’s first ever gold medal at the Olympic Games in the Marathon. He won it in 1912 in the Marathon, his time 2:36:54.8
- The Potchefstroom Country Club with its 18-hole golf course was the first grass 18 - hole course in the South African interior and has been the host for the South African open twice.
- The Potchefstroom Oak Avenue was planted in 1910. On the corner of Lombard and Kruger Street there is a bronze plate made in 1975 that made the Oak Avenue a national heritage site. The avenue is about 6, 48 KM long and is the longest Oak Avenue in the Southern Africa.
- The provincial offices of 17 Sport head offices are located in Potchefstroom.
- The first public building erected in Potchefstroom was a church.
- Potchefstroom is house of the first Cricket, Rugby, and Tennis Club in Transvaal
